- Use simple, clear language and avoid using figurative language or idioms.
- Speak slowly and clearly, using a normal tone of voice.
- Use gestures and facial expressions to help convey meaning.
- Repeat or rephrase the question or request if the person does not understand.
- Use visual aids, such as pictures or written words, to help convey meaning.
- Allow the person extra time to process what you are saying and to respond.
- Encourage the person to use whatever means of communication they are able to, such as gestures, writing, acting out, or using a communication board.
- Avoid interrupting or finishing the person's sentences for them.
- Use context clues, such as the person's facial expressions and body language, to help understand their needs and preferences.
- Be patient and understanding, and try not to get frustrated or upset if the person has difficulty expressing themselves.
