Common Features/Symptoms of Vascular Dementia

Caused by decreased blood flow to the brain, which then causes damage to blood vessels and the vascular system.

  • Deficits in attention span  
  • Deficits in planning and decision making  
  • Difficulty following directions
  • Over time, increased confusion and impairments in memory
  • Typically progresses in a stepwise fashion (symptoms worsen, plateau, worsen, plateau...)
  • Often significant fluctuation in symptoms from day to day
  • Sensitive to changes in blood flow to the brain
  • If caused by something like a stroke: could be additional deficits in physical abilities, language skills, spatial awareness, visual skills, etc.
