Common Features/Symptoms of Vascular Dementia
Caused by decreased blood flow to the brain, which then causes damage to blood vessels and the vascular system.
- Deficits in attention span
- Deficits in planning and decision making
- Difficulty following directions
- Over time, increased confusion and impairments in memory
- Typically progresses in a stepwise fashion (symptoms worsen, plateau, worsen, plateau...)
- Often significant fluctuation in symptoms from day to day
- Sensitive to changes in blood flow to the brain
- If caused by something like a stroke: could be additional deficits in physical abilities, language skills, spatial awareness, visual skills, etc.
