What is Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)?

  • Mild cognitive decline
  • Changes in cognition become noticeable to those closest to the person and detectable by clinical testing
  • You may notice issues with world-finding, attention span, and problem-solving.
  • Function in both familiar simple and complex tasks remains relatively intact, BUT complex tasks especially, become more effortful and require more time and energy, which can lead to increased frustration
  • Is technically considered a "pre-dementia" stage
  • Some people with MCI will progress to having "full-blown" dementia
  • Others will remain with just MCI and have stable, mild cognitive impairment
  • And for others, their symptoms will resolve

*The trajectory of each person's path depends on what is causing the MCI to begin with. If the cause is neurodegenerative in nature, then the symptoms will ultimately progress, but if not, then the symptoms could resolve or just stay relatively stable.*
