Unfortunately, getting a dementia diagnosis is not a clear cut process. A diagnosis is given by process of elimination. Because of this, misdiagnosis is fairly common.

Typically if a person is exhibiting cognitive difficulties and dementia is in question, the doctor will:

  • Review medical and family history
  • Perform a physical examination
  • Conduct cognitive assessments
  • Run laboratory tests
  • Order imaging tests

It can be quite the process and even the cognitive assessments can take several hours to perform as the person is often given a battery of different cognitive exams.
